They are based on a reading of a damaged portion of her headstone, which appeared to bear that date. But the 1850 Census of Doddridge County, enumerated on July 23 1850, shows that she was residing with her husband in the home of their son John. A re-examination of a photograph of the headstone shows that what had appeared to be a zero as the last digit of the year 1850 was more likely the upper portion of an eight, making the death date Apr 3 1858. The lower portion of the headstone has become even more damaged since the photo was taken. No death record was found for her at Doddridge County. (4) W. Guy Tetrick files.
