(4) Headstone, Reports of Sarah Garrett Hart's death date as Apr 3 1850 are incorrect.  They are based on a reading of a 
damaged portion of her headstone, which appeared to bear that date.  But the 1850 Census of Doddridge County, enumerated 
on July 23 1850, shows that she was residing with her husband in the home of their son John.  A re-examination of a 
photograph of the headstone shows that what had appeared to be a zero as the last digit of the year 1850 was more likely 
the upper portion of an eight, making the death date Apr 3 1858.  The lower portion of the headstone has become even 
more damaged since the photo was taken.  No death record was found for her at Doddridge 
County.

Aug 25 1853.  Groom identified as Josiah Hart, age 24, born in Baltimore MD.  Bride identified as Mary Mathew, age 18, 
b. Preston County.  Her given age would put birth in about 1835, but 1900 Census gives her age as 68 and states her 
birthdate as Jan 1832.  MR Bk 1 listed bride's parents as Humphrey & Sarah Ann Mathew, but MR Bk 1-B identified her 
father as Overfield Matthews.

Note (1) Hand-carved inscription on the fieldstone marker reads:  "Josiar Hart, the
Pap of John G. Hart, died in the yeare of our Lord 1867 May the 17"
Note (2) In household of son John.
Note (3) From a photograph, the hand-carved inscription on the fieldstone marker
reads:  "Garrett, Sarah Hart, the wife of Josiar Hart, died in the yeare of our
Lord 1850 April 3."  Subsequent to the taking of that photo, the lower portion
of the fieldstone, containing the date, has deteriorated and no longer exists.
Note (4) Moved from Maryland to Harrison Co, (W)VA at age two, per grandson John W.
Hart.
Note (5) But headstone of wife states marriage date as Sep 22 1844.
Note (6) Marriage bond signed by the husband's brother, Edmund L. Cain, and by the
wife's father, Josiah Hart, on Oct 28 1839.  The marriage record itself does not
specify a date.
Note (7) The 1860 Census of Doddridge County gives age as 34 (b. ca 1826), born in
Virginia, while the 1870 Census gives age 48 (b. ca 1822), born in Maryland, and
the 1880 Census gives age 60 (b. ca 1820), born in Maryland.  Her death record
in May 1892 gives age as 63 (b. ca 1829), born in Barbour Co; both age and
birthplace are considered incorrect.  Brad Spiker specifies birthdate as Nov 16
1821.  Don Norman, in "The Descendants of Josiah Hart," reports birth as ca
1828, probably based on her death record.
