Event Notes Note (1) Age in 1880 Census would put birth in about 1825, but date on headstone is 1822. Note (2) Listed as Delilah Owens, 55, widowed, a housekeeper in the household of F. J. Ashburn and his wife N. C. Note (3) In the hotel of Francis F. M. Smith. Note (4) On 27 Nov 1863, John Wesley Gatrell was slightly wounded in the engagement at Payne Farm, Va. On 17 May 1865 Gatrell signed a document from the Povost Marshall in Staunton, Virginia stating that...... "I, J. W. Gatrell, Private of Co. A 25th Virginia Infantry, C. S. Army, do hereby give this my Parole of Honor, that I will not take up arms against the United States Government until I am regularly exchanged. And that if I am permitted to remain in my home, I will conduct myself as a good and peaceful citizen, and I will respect the laws in force where I reside, and I will do nothing to the detriment of, or in opposition to, the United States Government..." On that document is his physical description: 5'9", dark complexion, black hair, gray eyes. Note (5) Listed as a patient in the Weston Insane Asylum. Note (6) Along with his wife, enumerated in the household of Russell J & Amanda L. (Owens) Kinney. Note (7) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Aug 1853, and age 28 in the 1880 Census puts it in about 1852. But age 17y 2m at time of Jul 1865 marriage puts it in 1848. He was with his family in the 1850 Census, age 4, and in the 1860 Census, age 15. Note (8) Military records show that William Henry Gatrell enlisted in Co C, 6th W.Va. Inf, on 29 Aug 1864 in Wheeling at the age of 16. He gave his occupation as farmer, birthplace Doddridge County, Mustered in as a Private on 30 Aug 1864 in Wheeling. He mustered out with the company as a Private on 10 June 1865 in Wheeling.
