On 17 May 1865 Gatrell signed a document from the Povost Marshall in Staunton, Virginia stating that...... "I, J. W. Gatrell, Private of Co. A 25th Virginia Infantry, C. S. Army, do hereby give this my Parole of Honor, that I will not take up arms against the United States Government until I am regularly exchanged. And that if I am permitted to remain in my home, I will conduct myself as a good and peaceful citizen, and I will respect the laws in force where I reside, and I will do nothing to the detriment of, or in opposition to, the United States Government..."
