Event Notes
Note (1) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Aug 1853, and age 28 in the 1880 Census
puts it in about 1852. But age 17y 2m at time of Jul 1865 marriage puts it in
1848. He was with his family in the 1850 Census, age 4, and in the 1860 Census,
age 15.
Note (2) Military records show that William Henry Gatrell enlisted in Co C, 6th W.Va.
Inf, on 29 Aug 1864 in Wheeling at the age of 16. He gave his occupation as
farmer, birthplace Doddridge County, Mustered in as a Private on 30 Aug 1864 in
Wheeling. He mustered out with the company as a Private on 10 June 1865 in
Wheeling.
Note (3) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Sep 1855. But age 17 in Jul 1865 marriage
record puts it in about 1848.
Note (4) Birth date on headstone is 1875, and Social Security records state birth date
as Aug 4 1875. But birth record shows it as Jul 24 1872, while age 10 in the
1880 Census puts it in about 1870. Name in birth record: Christian Gatrel.
Note (5) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Jan 1890. But date on headstone is
1891.
