Event Notes
Note (1) Civil War records on file at Doddridge County Court House show that W. E.
Crichfield [sic] enlisted in the Union Army on Jan 3 1862. According to his
grave marker, he was a member of Company M, 6th West Virginia Infantry, with
rank of Private. His death occurred on Aug 10 1864 in Cumberland, MD, and was
the result of falling from a window of a hospital building. Circumstances of
his death are described somewhat differently in his military records on file at
fold3.com and the National Archives, which state that he was killed when a
hospital building was blown over by a storm and fell on him.
He was buried in the Nutter Cemetery on the Maxwell Farm in Doddridge County.
Location of the cemetery was specified as "4.0 miles west of Porto Rico on Route
23. Cemetery 400 ft. north of highway." This corresponds to oral family
history provided by Walter Ray "Shiner" Husk, who advised that a headstone does
exist for William, but not for his wife Malinda buried beside him.
Note (2) Presumed. Husband remarried on Dec 31 1908. His marital status was not
indicated in his marriage record.
Note (3) Researcher Lizabeth Cottrill White reports birthplace as Trapp Run in
Doddridge County, but death record states Roane County.
Note (4) William E. Critchfield was enumerated twice in 1870, once in the household of
grandparents William Watson & Nancy Nutter in Doddridge County, and once in the
household of his mother and stepfather in Roane County.
