(Note: The fact of Catherine Morgan being the mother of Morris Deming (b. 1807) is so reported in Reed's highly respected Durfee genealogy, Vol 2, p. 6. But her age 55 as given in this census would put her birth in about 1795, just 12 years before her son's birth. Although it is clear that Morris Deming (b. ca 1771 in Portugal) is the father of Celia and the younger Morris, one would conclude that the children had a different mother if her stated age in this census is correct. But it appears that her age in the census is not correct, based on age 66 given in her death record less that one year later. Regarding the census, it would appear that the non-Deming members of the household were probably tenants of Morris Deming's boarding house.)

"At the time Mrs. Young's father moved to what is now known as Cairo in 1838, he purchased from the old McKinney estate the tract of land now covered by Cairo, that is all east of the river, which was in woods at that time. We have often heard of the cornfield that covered that side of the town. Mrs. Young's father sold the B & O Co. the lot of ground now occupied by them as a depot and loading ground. The Cairo Mercantile Co. is on this tract. In the early days of Cairo, the Lowthers were prominent in the building of the town."
