| 1074 | 1860 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Jun 30 1860: A. A. Strawthers, 37, farmer, value of real estate $600, value of personal estate $300; Lucinda, 36; C. T. (male), 10; O. C. (male), 8; D. P. (male), 6; J. E. (male), 4; R. A. (female), 3; M. J. (female), M. J. (female), 2. All born in Virginia. "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 69, incorrectly states that Aaron Arden Strother died in Harrison County before 1870, presumably basing that conclusion on Lucinda and their children appearing in the 1870 Census without him. However, the Diary of Flavius Josephus Ashburn, p. 73, in an entry for July 1861, states "On Sunday the 7th, that evening Nancy and I went by way of New Salem to Lucinda Strothers. (I would have wrote to Arden Strothers instead of Lucinda Strothers, but Arden, having lost his right mind, has put his property out of his hands and left his family and went off with an ornery girl.)." The validity of Ashburn's diary is demonstrated in the 1870 Census, which shows Lucinda in Doddridge County with their children and Aaron in the state of Indiana with his new family. Additionally, Aaron served with the Indiana Infantry in the Civil War from 1862 to 1865. 1870 Census, Jackson County, Indiana (Ward 5, City of Seymour), enumerated on Jun 20 1870: Aaron Strother, 41, b.
