Event Notes Note (1) A death date of 1847 has been reported by some researchers, probably from a misinterpretation of court documents. Doddridge County Chancery Court records for the March 1840 term (then Tyler County), pertaining to the division of his estate, show that Aaron Shinn had died sometime prior to that date. The case was not finalized until sometime after 1847, as the file also contains documents from that year. This was just the second Chancery Court case ever held in Doddridge County, which was formed in 1845. Note (2) Military records show that William J. Shinn, age 30, born in Tyler County, farmer, enlisted as Private in Co E, 6th W.Va. Infantry, at Central Station on Oct 3 1862 for a term of three years. In June and July 1863, under Lt. George M. Ireland, he had duty at the Smithton N.W.V.R.R. (North West Virginia Railroad) in Doddridge County building a blockhouse. He remained there afterwards to perform guard duty. From Jul 4 to Aug 23 1864, he was sick in the General Hospital at Cumberland, Maryland. He was promoted to Corporal on Dec 26 1864.Name Index
