But 1900 Census shows age as 53, birth date Feb 1847. Note (2) Her obituary in the West Union Herald of Thursday, Jan 6 1921, states that she "died at her home in Salem at 3 o'clock Monday morning," without specifying a date. The previous Monday would have been Jan 3 1921. However, the obituary also contains a footnote indicating that it had been reprinted from another newspaper, the Exponent. The obituary may therefore have appeared not three days after her death, but ten days, which would put her death date at Dec 27 1920. This appears to be likely, since the death date on her headstone is 1920. No death record has been found for her. Note (3) When her husband John W. Dotson remarried Hattie O'Dell in Nov 1893, his marital status was not indicated. It is assumed that Florence (Melzena) was deceased at that time, as was also indicated in the 1900 Census entry regarding her mother's children.
