- He received his degree in mathematics from West Virginia University, where he attended on an athletic scholarship. He volunteered in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Junior Grade during World War II. In the war, he served as skipper of a PT boat that helped liberate prisoners in the Pacific, including survivors of the Bataan Death March. After moving with his family from West Virginia in 1953, he taught math and coached golf at Chula Vista High School for over 20 years, retiring in 1976. He was a charter member of the Coronada Municipal Golf Course. [2]
