His will, written on March 8 1862, was submitted for probate on January 26 1863, referring to him as "Ralph Smith, deceased." His will indicates that he was predeceased by children Elizabeth and John. (Doddridge County Will Book 1, page 43) The type and condition of Ralph Smith's gravestones indicate that they were probably placed long after his death. Local death records during the Civil War period are sparse, and we have not found one for him.
