    Notes 
    • As stated in her marriage bond of Sep 14 1807, Sarah Spence Mott was the ward of James Fleming. Confusingly, in her marriage record three days later, she was identified as Hannah Spence Mott. No other reference to her as Hannah has been found. She is sometimes incorrectly identified by researchers as Sarah Fleming.

      Complete text of the marriage bond:
      "Know all men by these presents, that we, William Jaco and James Fleming, both of the County of Harrison & State of Virginia, are held firmly and bound unto Wm. H. Cabell, Governor of Virginia, in the just and full sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to which payment well and truly to be made, to the said Governor or his successors, we bind ourselves, and each of our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals, and dated this 14th day of Septr 1807.
      "The condition of the above Obligation is such, that whereas there is a Marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between William Jaco & Sarah Spence Mott, Ward of the said James Fleming, now if there be no lawful cause to object the said Marriage, then the above Obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
      "Signed, sealed and delivered in presence of Benj. Wilson.
      "Wm. Jaco (his mark), James Fleming."

      Identified as Wm. Jaco and Hannah Spence Mott. Married Sep 17 1807. (Note: Wife was identified as Sarah Spence Mott in the marriage bond executed three days before. She was also identified as Sarah in the 1850 Census. No other record has been found of her as Hannah.)
