- Local military news item, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, Dec 5 1918, in its entirety:
"Battling Corporal Walt Doak, formerly one of West Virginia's best hardware salesmen, spent a brief furlough with home folks here and with (name deleted by censor) his best girl in Parkersburg. Since going to Camp A. A. Humphreys, Va., Walt has become a regular "pick artist" -- a "slick trick" at stump grubbing. Asked when he thought he would get out, he replied that he had lost all hopes so long as the stumps lasted."
