- As an educator, C. I. Elder promoted memorization of lists by putting them to music. In the 1937-1938 Doddridge County School Directory, which listed C. I. Elder as Assistant County Superintendent of Schools, two sets of song lyrics were printed, one to help students memorize the U.S. presidents, and the other for memorizing the counties of West Virginia. Each song had the notation "Tune: If You Love Your Mother Meet Her in the Skies. Words arranged by C. I. Elder." The referenced melody was apparently widely known at the time and is now in the public domain. It can be found at

- C. I. Elder wrote the words and music to the World War II patriotic song "When Our U.S. Band Plays Dixie in Berlin," copyright 1943.
Our Uncle Sam has called us, and our boys are on their way;
To help the Allies in the fight, to drive the foe away.
We'll gladly give to this Great Cause, we're in the war to win;
And we will stop when our U.S. Band plays Dixie in Berlin.
CHORUS:
When our U.S. Band plays Dixie in Berlin....
We'll show the Axis we are in the fight to win!
What a joyful time there'll be;
And the whole world will be free,
When our U.S. Band plays Dixie in Berlin.
We are not in this war for gain, or conquest o'er the sea;
Our one desire in this great fight is to set the whole world free.
We'll give our boys our wealth, and all, to this Great Cause we're in;
Till Uncle Sam, with the Stars and Stripes, marches proudly through Berlin.
CHORUS (same as above)
And when the cruel war is done, and our boys home from the fight;
We'll live in peace with all the world, for right has conquered might.
There'll be no Hitler, Tojo, Hermann Goering, or any kin;
Democracy in... all her bloom, will rule in old Berlin.
CHORUS:
When our U.S. Band played Dixie in Berlin....
The people shouted "Right and Justice always win!"
We brought freedom to the world,
When Old Glory we unfurled,
And our U.S. Band played Dixie in Berlin.
