    • At the age of four, Alexander Lowther moved with his family from Harrison County to where Oxford is now located, partially in Ritchie and partially in Doddridge County, their house being the first built there. He was a charter member of the Washingtonian Temperance society. He worked for 21 years as county surveyor in Ritchie County, served as county assessor, and was interested in various mercantile businesses near Ellenboro, where he located for some time. At one time, he lived at Graham Station, moving from there to Elizabeth, where he was prominent in public affairs. [2]
