    Notes
    • "Elias Lowther became a surveyor in early life, and when Wood County was formed, he was appointed by the surveyors of both Wood and Harrison to survey the line between the two counties. He was also a deputy surveyor for Wood County and a Justice of the Peace. It is evident that he lived in Wood County for a few years, as did his brother Jesse Lowther and their father, but they all returned to West Milford in Harrison County. Elias Lowther "was at one time a member of the Richmond Legislature from Harrison county, and was major in the militia. During the latter part of his life he lost his mind, and his last years were spent in the insane hospital at Staunton, Virginia, where he was laid to rest near the year 1845."

In Harrison County Chancery case No. 83, File 9, Lewis Maxwell vs. Jonathan Howell, regarding a land dispute, Elias Lowther made the following statement on Oct 13 1840 while at the house of fellow surveyor Minter Bailey in Weston:
"The platt beginning at the Willow Island on Middle Island Creek extending up the same containing twenty lots and marked on the back Lewis Maxwell vs Howell and much defaced by mould is the same made out by me for Nathan Davis & J. Howell and others perhaps about the year 1823...I am well assured the dates and figures are my own marks." [1, 3]
