DODDRIDGE SOLDIER KILLED IN ITALY
Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Carroll, of Ashley, Doddridge County, have been officially notified by the War Department that their son, Private First Class Herbert D. Carroll, Co G, 339th Infantry, was killed in action in central Italy on November 3, 1944. He was an assistant machine gunner in a front line infantry company and was struck by fragments of an enemy mortar shell. He was buried with military honors in an American cemetery in Italy.
Private Carroll was awarded the Purple Heart in August, which he sent home to his parents. He took part in the liberation of Rome. (Elsewhere in this issue appears the poem "Hill 79," which was written by Pvt. Carroll after the battle of Rome.)
Pvt. Carroll was born Dec 5, 1921, at Ashley. He entered the service on Dec 9 1942, trained at Camp Vandorn, Michigan, and at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and spent one year overseas.
Besides his parents, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Dennis, Jack, Gail, Robert, William, Imogene, Norma Lee, Eldra Rae, and Loretta.
