  Notes	In World War I, he served as a cook at Camp Hospital 26 at the strategically important U.S. replacement depot in Noyers-sur-Cher, France. A large monument erected at the location states: "Occupied by the 1st Div VSA 24 Jan 1918 - 27 Dec 1918 and by the first replacement depot 27 Dec 1918 - 10 July 1919. A half million American soldiers passed through this depot. Erected in memory of the 853 American soldiers who died in this area." One of the most important facilities on site was Camp Hospital 26, situated opposite the current cemetery. Its own cemetery was on one side of the hospital grounds. Officially, it could hold 1500 patients, but in times of emergency, took up to 2200, dealing with medical, surgical and dental cases. As such, it was an exceptionally large facility of its kind and had several specialist clinics (e.g., venereal disease and flat feet). The usual standard for a camp hospital was 300 beds.
