      Private William Wyatt, Co. "L" 1st W.Va. Cavalry, was 18 years old when he enlisted at Wheeling on Feb 28, 1865. He was discharged July 8, 1865. He had enlisted as a Substitute Volunteer for Alfred Jennings, Esquire, of Doddridge County and was paid the sum of $300.00 by the Jennings Family. During his service, William worked at Remount Stations due to his knowledge of horses. His father, Jasper Wyatt was also a Union Civil War Soldier, serving with Co "E" 6th W.Va. Infantry.

      The record shows that John W. Wyatt and Melinda A. Critchfield were married on Apr 7 1866 in Beaver Co, Pennsylvania, by A. J. Pettit, a Justice of the Peace. The original handwritten certificate was presented for recording in Doddridge Co on Feb 12 1867 by William Watson.

      Identified as John W. Wyatt, 62, b. Marion Co, res. Gandeeville, and Mrs. Eliza A. Starcher, 55, b. Kanawaha Co, res. Sisco (corrected from Henry's Fork). Married Dec 31 1908 "at the residence of Eliza A. Starcher in Roane County." (Note: Because of the title "Mrs." (corrected from the default "Miss"), it is presumed that Starcher was the bride's surname from a previous marriage. Although a town with a similar name (Cisco) is found in Ritchie County on the Wirt County border, the location of a Roane County community called Sisco is not known.)
