- Military records show that William J. Shinn, age 30, born in Tyler County, farmer, enlisted as Private in Co E, 6th W.Va. Infantry, at Central Station on Oct 3 1862 for a term of three years. In June and July 1863, under Lt. George M. Ireland, he had duty at the Smithton N.W.V.R.R. (North West Virginia Railroad) in Doddridge County building a blockhouse. He remained there afterwards to perform guard duty. From Jul 4 to Aug 23 1864, he was sick in the General Hospital at Cumberland, Maryland. He was promoted to Corporal on Dec 26 1864.
