- Local news item for the town of Salem, WVa, in the Clarksburg (W.Va.) Exponent, Fri, 14 Aug 1896, in its entirety:
"About five or six weeks ago, James K. Bingman and his son Orus were brought home sick with typhoid fever, from the oil fields. Since then Mr. Bingman's family have all taken it, and a couple families adjoining have one or two members that have it. None are dangerously sick. This is about all the typhoid fever there is in Salem, and this we believe was brought here, and Salem is not full of it as we hear it reported. The authorities have cleaned up the ditches, sewers, etc., scattered lime all through them, and we believe the town of Salem today to be in as healthy condition as any surrounding place."
James K. Bingman was enumerated twice in 1870, once with his family in Ohio and again in his brother's household in Doddridge County.
