- Joseph Sherwood was residing in present-day Doddridge County (then Harrison County) as early as 1838, as his signature appears on a legislative petition for the formation of a new county. Additionally, according to an 1833 map containing the location of the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Western Sections of the North Western Turnpike, the Sherwood family was already living then in present-day Doddridge County. The map is on file at the Library of Virginia, Board of Public Works division.

NOTE: Daughter Maud Sherwood is actually John Sherwood's stepdaughter, Barbara Maude Steel, daughter of Elizabeth McClain and James E. Steel, who were not married
We have found no record of Joseph Sherwood after the 1860 Census, or of his wife Mary after the 1880 Census. Based largely on headstones at a cemetery in Buchanan Co, Missouri, some researchers report that this Joseph Sherwood was born Aug 2 1794 and died Mar 28 1863 in Missouri, and that his wife was Margery (b. Sep 24 1798, d. Jan 24 1859). We believe this to be incorrect, as it is contradicted by the foregoing census records.
