Some researchers report the parents of Nancy Nutter, the wife of William Watson, as James Nutter (1773-1833) and Julia Ann Davisson (1775-1826), a relationship that is at variance with substantiated facts about her. Nancy Nutter Watson's death record in Doddridge County states that she was born in Barbour Co, (W)VA, the daughter of "A. Nutter." While Barbour County is inconsistent with the reported birthplaces of her siblings (Harrison and Doddridge Counties) and may be incorrect, we do know that her husband William Watson's family had resided for some time in Barbour County, and that her two oldest children were also born in Barbour County. As far as can be determined, James Nutter and Julia Ann Davisson spent their entire lives in Harrison County and had no known Barbour County connections.

Adding to the confusion is the Nutter genealogy compiled by Donald Norman, based on Barr Wilson's work, listing among the children of James Nutter & Julia Ann Davisson, and also among the children of Andrew Nutter & Malinda Willis, a daughter named Nancy who married a William Watson. That there would be two Nancy Nutters who married two William Watsons in that region and time frame seems very unlikely. However, we do know that a Nancy Nutter married a William Watson in Harrison County on Oct 22 1840 (or possibly Mar 4 1841, based on interpretation of the handwritten marriage record; a Marriage Bond was executed in Harrison County on Sep 1 1840 by Nancy Nutter's parents, Anda (sic) & Malinda Nutter, and also signed by her brother Willis Nutter and by Otha G. Watson, half-brother of William M. Watson). There is nothing in the marriage record itself (MR Bk 3, p. 145) reflecting the parentage or exact identity of either person, leaving open the possibility that it was a different Nancy Nutter, a different William Watson, or both. But the family members mentioned in the marriage bond should dispel any doubt.

No other marriage record for William or Nancy was found in Harrison, Doddridge or Barbour Counties. Given all the evidence and circumstances, we conclude that it was this Nancy Nutter, daughter of Andrew Nutter & Malinda Willis, who married William Watson.

There is some question as to the date and place of birth of this William M. Watson. Age 45 given at time of 1860 Census would put birth in about 1815, while age given for the 1870 and 1880 Census would put birth ca 1819. Age 53 given at time of his second marriage, in Sep 1871, would put birth ca 1818. Age 72 given at the time of his death in Feb 1890 would put birth ca 1817 or 1818. His place of birth is given as Harrison County in the record of his second marriage, but as Mercer County in his death record. Harrison County would seem more likely.

He served in the War of 1812 in Captain Davis's company, attached to the First Regiment, First Battalion, and First Brigade of the Virginia Militia, participated in the engagement of Fort Defiance on the Maumee River, and was discharged at Delaware, Ohio on April 4, 1813.

Don Norman gives birth as about 1791 in Harrison County, and age 59 in 1850 Census would also put it in about 1791. But Hardesty states that Andrew Nutter died in 1855 at the age of 61, which would make the birth year about 1794.

Thomas Pritchard's ancestors came from England and settled at Jamestown in about 1610. His brother, John Pritchard, saw three years of service as a soldier in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. In about 1832, Thomas Pritchard came from The Glades in Preston County and built the first mill on the South Fork of Hughes River, below Oxford, making the first settlement in that area. A certain Henry O. Middleton had given him one hundred acres of land in that wilderness as inducement to settle and to erect a saw and grist mill.

Buried:
Emily Pritchard Cary (p. 82) reports his burial in "White Oak Cemetery, Oxford," while "Ritchie County WV Cemeteries," p. 631, reports his as the only burial at Pritchard Cemetery, described as "Incomplete. Near Oxford; Exact Location Unknown. See MKL - p. 40."

"Nancy Tichenell, first wife of Thomas Pritchard Jr., was descended from a prominent New Jersey family, most of whom retained the original spelling of Tichenor. Beginning with Nancy's father Moses, a Revolutionary War soldier, the spelling went awry, and his descendants used a variety of forms, most ending with 'L'."
Nancy Tichenell (Titchenell, Tichnell, Tichenal) died before Oct 25 1812 (the date of husband Thomas Pritchard's remarriage to Mary Moody) in what is now Preston Co, WV. Nancy and Thomas had seven or eight children. Some genealogists believe that his daughter Mary was actually the daughter of Mary Moody. Because his daughter Elizabeth was born Feb 20 1812, it is quite likely that Nancy died at the time of that birth, a common event in pioneer families. Mary's given name is another clue.
"Two weeks after their marriage in Allegany County, Maryland, Thomas became the guardian of Nancy's younger siblings, Stephen Tickenal (sic), Margaret Tickenal, and Jain (Jane) Tichenal, orphan children of Moses Tickenal, all of that county."

Notes:

John Nutter (1765-1808) moved with his parents to Fayette Co, PA in 1769, and to Harrison Co, VA (WV) in 1772. In 1772 he lived at Nutter's Fort, which his father Thomas Nutter was instrumental in building. John's will was either written or probated on Feb 22, 1808 in Harrison Co. Among other property, he left 200 acres of land in Ohio, suggesting that he had visited there at one time or another.
