Zahn enlisted on 5 Sep 1861 in Clarksburg, Va. (age 23), and mustered in on 21 Sep 1861 in Clarksburg, Va., as a Private in Co F, 1st Reg. Va. Mtd. Cav. Vol. Descriive Book: 5’10", fair complexion, hazel eyes, sandy hair, born in Frederick County, Maryland, occupation farmer. He was captured by Ashby's Cavalry near Strasburg, Virginia, on 26 Mar 1862, confined at Richmond, Virginia (presumably at Libby Prison). He was paroled on 11 May 1862 and granted a discharge on 23 May 1862 in Washington, DC, by surgeon's certificate. Note (2) "He served in the Civil War from Sep 1, 1862, until the close of the war. He enlisted in the First Virginia Cavalry, and after serving eight months he was captured and put in Libby prison. He was later exchanged as a paroled prisoner of war. Afterward he enlisted as Sergeant in Company B, Twelfth Regiment, Maryland Volunteers, until Sept. 1864, and then he again enlisted as sergeant in Company F, Eleventh Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry." [From his obituary. The stated 1862 enlistment date pertains to his Maryland service, not his West Virginia service, which records show began on Sep 5 1861.]
