He mustered in as a Private in Co M, 6th W.Va. Inf, on March 16 1861 in West Union. He was present for every muster roll. He was scheduled to muster out at Grafton on Dec 1 1864, rank Private, but the company muster-out roll stated that he was "sick in U.S. Genl Hospital at Cumberland, Md. Not mustered out." Following Charles W. Zahn's discharge, his unit, Co M of the 6th W.Va. Inf, was transferred to Co L, 6th W.Va. Inf, per Special Order No. 72, dated Dec 26 1864. The 6th infantry was organized by authority of the War Department and was mustered into the U. S. service from August to December 1861 for the purpose of guarding the Baltimore & Ohio railroad in the state. During the years 1862 the companies were moved about from place to place as their services were needed. ... The non-veterans were mustered out at the expiration of the original term of enlistment and the veterans and recruits were retained in service until June 10, 1865, when they were mustered out by order of the war department. (Signed) (name illegible), 1st Lieut, 4th U.S. Infty, M and L Officer (Signed) James Washburn, Col., 116th Ohio Vol. Infy, (illegible) Comd Despite Charles W. Zahn's occupation as physician in the 1860 Census and at the time of his enlistment, the 26 pages of military records on file for him at the U.S. National Archives refer to him only by the rank of Private and give no indication that his military duties may have been of a medical nature. Note (2) Military records show that William C. Zahn enlisted on 5 Sep 1861 in Clarksburg, Va. (age 23), and mustered in on 21 Sep 1861 in Clarksburg, Va., as a Private in Co F, 1st Reg. Va. Mtd. Cav. Vol. Descriive Book: 5’10", fair complexion, hazel eyes, sandy hair, born in Frederick County, Maryland, occupation farmer. He was captured by Ashby's Cavalry near Strasburg, Virginia, on 26 Mar 1862, confined at Richmond, Virginia (presumably at Libby Prison). He was paroled on 11 May 1862 and granted a discharge on 23 May 1862 in Washington, DC, by surgeon's certificate. Note (3) "He served in the Civil War from Sep 1, 1862, until the close of the war. He enlisted in the First Virginia Cavalry, and after serving eight months he was captured and put in Libby prison. He was later exchanged as a paroled prisoner of war. Afterward he enlisted as Sergeant in Company B, Twelfth Regiment, Maryland Volunteers, until Sept. 1864, and then he again enlisted as sergeant in Company F, Eleventh Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry." [From his obituary. The stated 1862 enlistment date pertains to his Maryland service, not his West Virginia service, which records show began on Sep 5 1861.] Note (4) In household of daughter and son-in-law Lelia & Hobert Lipscomb.
