(9) Doddridge County Marriage Records, West Union, WV, Identified as B. F. Bond, 21, res. Doddridge Co, son of B. B. Bond; and Nancy Sayre, 19, res. Doddridge Co, dau of Elizabeth Sayre. Marriage license issued on Oct 30 1850. NOTE: This record pertains only to the issuance of a marriage license. A corresponding record of the actual marriage has not been found, but it was customary for a couple to marry within a day or two of issuance of the license. Benjamin F. Bond's obituary states that he and Nancy Sayre were married in 1845 and that she died in 1847, both dates clearly incorrect. Apparently also incorrect is the identification in this marriage license record of Nancy's mother as Elizabeth, rather than Mary (Smith) Sayre as indicated in the 1850 Census of Doddridge County. http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=11792046&Type=Marriage. Event Notes Note (1) In the 1845 Taxable Property List, Doddridge County, (W)VA, dated 19 August 1845, Mary Sayre was listed as the head of household. She was taxed on two horses and one wooden clock, as well as one male in the household over the age of 16. Mary Sayre subsequently appeared as head of household in the 1850 Census of Doddridge County. Note (2) The following letter was written by Doddridge County's Chapman Johnson Stuart to West Virginia Governor Arthur I. Boreman on behalf of Holdridge Sayre: Transcription by Bryan Holmes, undergraduate student enrolled in Dr. Billy Joe Peyton's Fall 2010 "Introduction to Public History" at West Virginia State University http://www.wvculture.org/history/wvmemory/militia/doddridge/ doddridge08-01t.html West Union July 24th/64 Gov. Boreman, Dear Sir, Capt Holdridge S. Sayre of this County wishes a recruiting commission under the Presidents last call for 500000 men. Mr. Sayre can recruit a good many men in our county, and I believe would be the most successful man in that way that could be [?] commending. Please send him a commission I am anxious that [?] should avoid a dr [?]. Yours with highest respects C. J. Stuart Note (3) Age 16y 1m in April 1857 death record would put birth in about March 1841. But Findagrave reports birth/death dates as 1840-1857, but specifies age as 17y 1m 19d. No photograph.
