At first glance, the latter entry looks like July 5 1858, but closer examination of the elegant handwritten entry reveals that what appears to be "July" is actually "Jany," the common abbreviation for January in those days. Reported filed by undertaker Joseph Cheuvront on Jul 4 1889. NOTE: Of the two entries, the first appears to be the more credible. It is noted that the first report, with death date corresponding to the headstone date, was filed by the attending physician immediately after the death and burial, while the second was filed by the undertaker two months later. Regarding the locations mentioned, Cloverdale and Alpha were communities that have since been encompassed by the community of Big Flint, located along Flint Run. There are two cemeteries at Big Flint in close proximity to each other, the Doak Cemetery and the Keys Cemetery. Ramage's "Cemeteries of Doddridge County, Vol. I," p. 64, reports that John H. Marital status was not included in the 1870 Census, but it is probable that Samuel had died sometime since the 1860 Census. Neither of them was found in the 1880 Census.
