News article, "Wheeling Daily Intelligencer," Wednesday, March 22, 1865, in its entirety: OIL MATTERS Some of the best indication of oil in West Virginia are said to exist in the counties of Gilmer and Doddridge. Oil springs were recently discovered on two different head drains of Cabin Run -- a branch of the North Fork of Hughes River. Some practical oil men who have recently explored Doddridge and leased and bought property there, say that the geological character of several head vales of Middle Island Creek in Doddridge is so identically similar to that of Oil and Sugar creeks in Venango County, Pa., that were a man transported from one county to the other in his sleep, he would not discover it when waking up. A friend writing to us from New York says: "Hon. J. B. Blair and some friends are here on oil business -- John S. Carlile also was here a few days ago, trying to sell some oil territory."
