Event Notes Note (1) In 1930, location specified as 403 Church Street. Note (2) Connection, if any, of the following item to Jackson VanBuren Blair is not known. News article, "Wheeling Daily Intelligencer," Wednesday, March 22, 1865, in its entirety: OIL MATTERS Some of the best indication of oil in West Virginia are said to exist in the counties of Gilmer and Doddridge. Oil springs were recently discovered on two different head drains of Cabin Run -- a branch of the North Fork of Hughes River. Some practical oil men who have recently explored Doddridge and leased and bought property there, say that the geological character of several head vales of Middle Island Creek in Doddridge is so identically similar to that of Oil and Sugar creeks in Venango County, Pa., that were a man transported from one county to the other in his sleep, he would not discover it when waking up. A friend writing to us from New York says: "Hon. J. B. Blair and some friends are here on oil business -- John S. Carlile also was here a few days ago, trying to sell some oil territory." Note (3) Birth date given in 1900 Census as Mar 1886, but date on headstone is 1885 and WW2 Draft Registration Card specifies Mar 13 1885. Note (6) per brother George's WW2 Draft Registration Card Note (7) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Youth_Administration Note (8) Local news item, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, Jun 6 1918, in its entirety: Jackson V. Blair, Jr., has been called to the aviation service, and prior to his departure for Camp Dick, Dallas, Texas, he spent a day in the old home town. Notwithstanding political differences, we always kind o' liked the kid, and here's wishin' 'im the best o' luck and some fifty-odd notches on his machine before this thing is over. as to "Little Jack's" last "official act," it was one of the most commendable in the hole category of human kindness. Local news item, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, Aug 29 1918, in its entirety: "Jackson V. Blair, Jr., showed up bright and smiling Monday morning, his new windshield trimmed to an exact nicety. Jack in on the move once more -- leavin' Columbus for the School of Military Aeronautics at Austin, Texas. Evidently Uncle Sam wants at least one good man down on the bornder to keep an eye on Mexico." Other than his four years of W.Va. National Guard Service which he reported in his World War I draft registration, we have found no record that Jackson V. Blair Jr. served in the U.S. military. In his WW I draft registration of May 1917, he claims exemption from the military draft, citing his prominent position with the Internal Revenue Service. However, his death certificate indicates that he served in World War I, and research by historian Judi Tarowsky has found credible evidence that he served in the short-lived West Virginia Flying Corps. http://wvpublic.org/post/july-26-1917-west-virginia-flying-c orps-commissioned#stream/0 http://www.herald-dispatch.com/news/putnam_news/w-va-native- started-the-west-virginia-flying-corps-sacrificed/article_1f d4c281-61bf-5e6d-af35-7306599c0f9c.html http://americanhistory.si.edu/blog/WWI-letter https://news.lib.wvu.edu/2017/10/23/west-virginias-own-world -war-i-flying-ace-louis-bennett-1894-1918/ http://www.tellerjuditarowsky.com Note (9) He was enumerated twice in this census, once with his family in West Union, and then as a lodger in Akron. Note (10) Location specified as "Veterans Administration Facilty (Nervous and Mental Diseases)." Note (11) Served aboard the minelayer U.S.S. Canonicus from Aug 17 1918 to Jan 5 1919 in Scotland and North Sea. "During the summer and fall of 1918 [the Canonicus] participated in laying the North Sea mine barrage, an anti-submarine barrier intended to limit the German U-Boat threat. Canonicus returned to the U.S. at the beginning of 1919, less than two months after the end of World War I's fighting. Reconverted to a troop transport and transferred to the Cruiser and Transport Force, she made three voyages from France to the East Coast, bringing home more than four-thousand veterans of the "Great War"." http://shipscribe.com/usnaux/ww1/ships/id1696.htmName Index
