He mustered in as a Private in Co M, 6th W.Va. Inf, on 16 Nov 1861 at West Union. Company Muster Rolls show that he served the following military assignments: Jan/Feb 1862 and 30 Apr 1862 to 31 Aug 1862 - Guard at No. 4 Tunnel and at bridges of the North Western Virginia Railroad Jan/Feb 1863 - Guard at No. 5 Tunnel at N.W.Va.R.R. bridges. May/Jun 1863 - Guard at No. 18 Tunnel and N.W.Va.R.R. bridges Jul/Aug 1863, Sep/Oct 1863 and Nov/Dec 1863 - Guard at Blockhouse No. 8 (N.W.Va.R.R.) 28 Dec 1863 - Reenlisted at Cumberland, Maryland, according to Co M & D Roll of Veteran Volunteers Jan/Feb 1864 - Guard at Blockhouse No. 8 (N.W.Va.R.R.)
