Note (2) Although the death record shows death date as Feb 23 1886, a second entry shows it exactly one year earlier, on Feb 23 1885. Death date on headstone is one day earlier, Feb 22 1886. In any event, an entry for him in found in the 1890 Veterans Census of Ritchie County. Note (3) Military records show that Thomas E. Nutter enlisted in Co M, 6th W.Va. Infantry, on 24 Nov 1861 in West Union. His description was given as age 18, born in Doddridge County, height 5'4.5", blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, occupation farmer. He mustered in as a Private on 21 Dec 1861 in West Union. Company Muster Roll for May/Jun 1863 shows that he was a Guard at No. 18 N.W.V.R.R. Tunnel and Bridge. In July/Aug and Nov/Dec 1863, he was Guard at No.9 N.W.V.R.R. Blockhouse. Having been promoted to the rank of 8th Corporal, he reenlisted on 28 Dec 1863 as a Veteran Volunteer at Cumberland, Maryland. In Jan/Feb 1864, he was a Guard at No.9 N.W.V.R.R. Blockhouse. He was on furlough in May/Jun 1864, returning to duty on 23 July 1864. He mustered out as a Corporal from Co M, 6th W.Va. Inf, on 1 Dec 1864 at Grafton, and on 26 Dec 1864 was transferred to Co. L, 6th W.Va. Infantry by virtue of Special Order 72 Hdqt. He mustered out of Co L, 6th W.Va. Inf, as a Corporal on 10 Jun 1865 at Wheeling. The wife of Thomas E. Nutter filed for a widow's pension on 7 Oct 1887. Note (4) Presumed. She was not in the 1860 the rest of the family. Note (5) In household of sister & brother-in-law Mary & John Gribble.
