(14) Doddridge County Marriage Records, West Union, WV. Event Notes Note (1) "Davis - The Settlers of Salem W.Va.," p. 53, reports birth date as June 7 1791. But in Joshua J. Davis's "Declaration for Pension," he states that he was age 79 as of July 5 1870. The Davis book also reports his death date as April 1873. But his military file contains a statement by his wife Delila Clark, in her application for a widow's pension, that he died on May 5 1873. Note (2) Sworn statement by Joshua J, Davis, dated 23 Oct 1850, on file at the National Archives as part of his War of 1812 Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application .... that he was a private in the company commanded by Captain McWhorter in the first regiment of Virginia militia commanded by Col. John Connell in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June A.D. 1812. That he volunteered at Clarksburg on or about the 1st day of September A.D. 1812 for the term of six months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of six months, and was honorably discharged at Camp Meigs [Perrysburg, Ohio] on the 29th day of March A.D. 1813... https://www.fold3.com/image/307401423 www.fortmeigs.org Note (3) Age 25 in 1850 Census and age 30 in 1856 marriage record would put birth in about 1825/26. But age 60 in the 1880 Census puts it in about 1820.
