Davis's "Declaration for Pension," he states that he was age 79 as of July 5 1870. The Davis book also reports his death date as April 1873. But his military file contains a statement by his wife Delila Clark, in her application for a widow's pension, that he died on May 5 1873. Note (2) Sworn statement by Joshua J, Davis, dated 23 Oct 1850, on file at the National Archives as part of his War of 1812 Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application .... that he was a private in the company commanded by Captain McWhorter in the first regiment of Virginia militia commanded by Col. John Connell in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June A.D. 1812. Infantry, on 10 Sep 1864 in Wheeling. He mustered in as a Private on 12 Sep 1864 in Wheeling, and mustered out as a Private on 10 Jun 1865 in Wheeling. NOTE: The state-issued Civil War medal intended for him was never claimed and remains in storage at the West Virginia State Archives in Charleston.
