G, 3rd W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. He mustered in on 25 Jun 1861 in Clarksburg. (NOTE: The 3rd Virginia Volunteer Infantry was a regiment that served in the Union Army. The regiment was redesignated the 6th W.Va. Volunteer Cavalry on 26 Jan 1864.) The company muster roll for July/Aug 1862 states that Hiram Rollins was wounded and in the hospital. The May/Jun 1863 muster roll states that he deserted and was under arrest. He was arrested on 17 May 1863 in Lewis County. The July/Aug 1863 muster roll states that he was under arrest at Fort Delaware by sentence of General Court Martial. He mustered out on 31 Jan 1864 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, to transfer to Co. B, 6th W.Va Volunteer Cavalry, to which he mustered in on 1 Feb 1864 as a Private at Martinsburg. The company muster roll for Jan/Feb 1865 states that Hiram Rollins was absent without leave since 19 Feb 1865. The May/Jun 1865 muster roll states that he returned from desertion on 20 Jun 1865 and was to forfeit 6 months pay, by order of General Court Martial. On 24 Nov 1865, he was under arrest at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on the Descriptive List of Deserters. On 23 Oct 1871, it was ruled that he had been dishonorably discharged for desertion, discharge date not specified. On 26 July 1900, the dishonorable discharge was rescinded. Note (5) The military file of Wesley Rollins, on file at the U.S. National Archives and available through www.fold3.com, reveals the following: Company Descriptive List - Farmer, age 20, born in Ritchie County, 5’8" tall, blue eyes, fair complexion, dark hair Enlisted June 25, 1861 in Clarksburg Mustered-in June 25, 1861 in Clarksburg as a Private in Co G, 3rd Va. But her obituary, in the Thursday, Jan 20 1916 issue of the West Union Record, states that she died "last Monday morning at 2:15 o'clock," which would put her death date at Jan 17 1916. Her obituary in the Jan 20 1916 issue of the Doddridge County Republican also specifies that she died "at her home at 2:15 Monday morning, Jan. 17, 1916." Her headstone also has the Jan 17 1916 death date. The death record entry is believed to be a clerical error, probably based on the filing date.
