- For decades Avis volunteered at Tyrand Cooperative Ministries in Mill Creek, an ecumenical organization serving the less-fortunate in the Randolph County area.
In 1982 she and her husband helped lay the block foundation for Tyrands building housing its Thrift Store and offices and for years provided any repairs needed at the facility. Avis assisted with Tyrands Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, Christmas Toy Store, Back to School Store, fund-raising dinners, auctions, Summer Day Camp and was a volunteer several years at the Thrift Store.
In addition, she represented Tyrand at many Celebrations of Mission events throughout West Virginia. As one of Tyrands Crazy Ladies crafters, Avis made sock monkeys and Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls to sell as fund raisers, and at Tyrand Fall Fairs supervised demonstrations of applebutter making. Avis received Tyrands Volunteer of the Year Award numerous times. In 2016 she was the recipient of the prestigious Doorway of Hope Award from the West Virginia United Methodist Conference for her volunteer work at Tyrand and for showing the less fortunate there is always hope. A member of Tygart Valley Presbyterian Church in Huttonsville for 60 years, Avis served as a Sunday School teacher and choir member, and assisted with many events including the churchs centennial celebration in 1983.
