    Buried:
    A double headstone for Sylvester Kinney and "Elizabeth his wife" is found in the IOOF section of Blockhouse Hill Cemetery in West Union. The upright monument is inscribed with her 1861 birth date, but no death date. Findagrave reports the following explanation:

    "Mariah Elizabeth Smith Kinney was the mother of my great-grandmother, Anna Loretta Metcalf. Sometime after Mariah Elizabeth's (sometimes spelled Maria E. Kinney) husband Sylvester died, she moved to Los Angeles, California to live with her daughter, Nancy Olive Kinney Finley. She died there in April of 1938 and was buried there because of the cost of transporting her remains back to West Virginia. Several years ago, her descendants from her daughter, Anna Loretta Metcalf, looked into the possibility of relocating her remains back to West Virginia. The family decided to let her continue to rest where she is in California. (submitted 19 Jan 2016) by FAG Contributor #48480372)"

    Local news item in the "West Union Record," Friday, Oct 2 1914:
    "Thomas J. Smith, of Liberal, Kansas, arrived here on Friday for a visit with his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Kinney. He came from Salem, where he had been the guest of his brother, I. D. Smith. Mr. Smith went from Central Station to the West thirty-five years ago, and while he made a visit to Ritchie and Tyler friends twenty-five years ago, he has not set foot on West Union soil since that time. He married a Kansas girl and has two sons, one of which, Master Thomas J. Jr., is with him."

    Donald H. Finley began his banking career in Los Angeles as a check sorter for Bank of America, where he later became an assistant manager. He was a loan officer and cashier for Commercial Bank in Tillamook and later was the manager of its Newberg office.
