    Notes:

    Although he was never able to attend a college of any kind, Edwin Maxwell pursued the study of law under the direction of a friend who was a practicing attorney. He passed the bar exam and was admitted to the bar at West Union, Doddridge County, in 1848. He served two terms as prosecuting attorney of Doddridge County, and in 1857 began practicing law in Clarksburg. He became a member of the well-known law firm of Despard, Maxwell & Goff. He was chairman of the judiciary committee in the First State Senate of West Virginia in 1863, and in 1866 was appointed Attorney General by Governor Boreman. He was judge of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals from 1867 to 1873, and in 1884 was the Republican Party's candidate for governor, unsuccessful in the Democratic landslide that year. In 1888 he was elected to the State Senate, serving two terms, and was later elected to the State House of Delegates, where he was serving at the time of his death.

    Minnie Kendall Lowther, HRC, p. 602, reports death date as 1893. But Morris Purdy Shawkey's publication twice states that Edwin Maxwell's death occurred on Feb 5 1903 in Charleston during the regular session of the WV state legislature, to which he was a delegate.

    Notes:

    Although a lawyer in his early life, Rufus Maxwell did not practice the profession after the Civil War. He was Justice of the Peace in Lewis County, but moved to Tucker County in 1856, where he filled the offices of District Attorney, Superintendent of Schools, County Surveyor, and was a representative in the West Virginia House of Delegates 1866-1870. In 1852 he received a patent for his improvement to churns.

    Twice married, both of Marion Bruce Summers' wives were named Maude. His first wife, Maude B. Stalnaker, died before Jan 1920, probably in Pennsylvania where he was found as a widower in the 1920 Census. They had three children, Joseph, Marion and Betty. His second wife, Leota Maude Goff, was known almost exclusively by her middle name. She had two previous marriages, first to James R. Wass who died in 1912 and by whom she had daughters Helen and Virginia. Her 1917 marriage to Edgar Sylvester White, a native of Maine, apparently soon ended in divorce. Marion Bruce Summers and Maude White were in adjacent households in the 1920 Census of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is not known when or where they were married, but they were in Sarasota, Florida at the time of his 1928 death. Maude was still residing there with her daughter Virginia in the 1945 Census, and she is reported to have died there later that year.

    In November 1914, along with accomplice C. D. Martin, Marion Bruce Summers was found guilty on multiple counts of bank fraud, specifically the embezzlement of about $35,000 from the First National Bank of West Union. They were both sentenced to five years in the West Virginia state prison.
