Notes: Dr. Eugene A. Gaston, 78, of Framingham, a staff surgeon at Framingham-Union Hospital for 49 years, died of cancer Sunday, June 8, 1986, in that hospital. A former associate clinical professor of surgery at Boston University School of Medicine, and a former vice president of both the Boston Surgical Society and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Dr. Gaston taught hundreds of surgeons at Framingham-Union and at the Boston University School of Medicine. Widely known for his writings on diseases of the colon and rectum, he was author of 63 scientific articles, and had written or rewritten approximately 1500 abstracts as associate editor of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum. An associate editor of the Scientific Journal, he also was a fellow of the American College of Surgery, the American Medical Association, the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Middlesex West District Medical Society. At the reception at Framingham Union Hospital on his retirement in 1985, Dr. Gaston was honored by proclamations from the Framingham Board of Selectman and from Gov. Dukakis. After earning his medical degree at Harvard Medical School in 1931, he undertook postgraduate internship training at Boston City Hospital and at the Cleveland Clinic. Born in Peoria, Ill., he was raised in Kansas and attended the University of Kansas for three years before entering Harvard Medical School. Eugene married Helena M. HOTCHKISS. Helena was born 17 Sep 1909, Kansas; died 29 Feb 2000, Framingham, Middlesex Co, MA. [Group Sheet] |
