    Occupation:
    As an educator, C. I. Elder promoted memorization of lists by putting them to music. In the 1937-1938 Doddridge County School Directory, which listed C. I. Elder as Assistant County Superintendent of Schools, two sets of song lyrics were printed, one to help students memorize the U.S. presidents, and the other for memorizing the counties of West Virginia. Each song had the notation "Tune: If You Love Your Mother Meet Her in the Skies. Words arranged by C. I. Elder." The referenced melody was apparently widely known at the time and is now in the public domain. It can be found at

    Washington served two terms, Adams one.
    Jefferson, Madison, Monroe two, John Quincy Adams one.
    Jackson two, Van Buren one, Harrison one month,
    Wehn he died and Tyler served, three years and eleven months.

    Polk one term and Taylor died at the end of his first year,
    Fillmore finished the next three years, one term for Pierce we hear,
    Buchanan one and Lincoln one, and started on his second,
    When he was killed and Johnson, finished Lincoln's second.

    Grant served two and Hayes one, and Garfield then six months,
    When he was killed and Arthur, served three years and six months.
    Cleveland one and Harrison one, and Cleveland once again,
    McKinley was killed soon after his second term began.

    Roosevelt finished McKinley's term and one more of his own,
    Taft served one and Wilson two, and Harding for two years,
    When he died and Coolidge, served the next six years,
    Then Hoover one and Franklin Roosevelt is serving his fifth year.
