    Listed in the household of John Starr (47, farmer & carpenter) and his wife Ellen M. Starr (42), were their six children and Armstrong Lowther, age 24, identified as "Idiotic & Pauper" and unable to read or write.

    1870 Census, Ritchie Co, WV (Clay District), enumerated on Aug 1 1870:
    Listed in the household of E. B. Leggett (58, miller) and his wife Sarah A. Leggett (56), were two of their children and five other persons, two of whom were identified as paupers, and one of whom was Armstrong Lowther, 40, occupation given as "(Pauper)," unable to read or write.

    1880 Census, Ritchie Co, WV (Murphy District), enumerated on July 10 1880:
    Listed in the household of Thomas B. Rexroad (33, farmer) and his wife Sara E. Rexroad (34), were their two sons, Albert (7) and Francis (4), and six other persons all of whom were identified as paupers. One of those was Armstrong Lowther, 60, occupation given as "Pauper," unable to read or write. Age 60 given for him is inconsistent with other records and is considered to be in error.

    Listed as an inmate at the Ritchie County Almshouse & Farm was Armstrong Lowther, 70, b. March 1830, unable to read or write.
