  1. 1.  Daniel TICHENORDaniel TICHENOR was born 9 Aug 1656, New Haven Colony, Connecticut; died May 1728, Newark, Essex Co, NJ.

    Notes:

    The Fundamental Agreement of the first settlers of Newark, New Jersey, was signed by a Daniel Tichenor, While improbable that the signer was this Daniel Tichenor since was only eleven years old at the time, it is still a possibility. The Fundamental Agreement (which provided that only members of the established church would be "admitted freemen or free Burgesses) did not have the force of law, and there is no good reason that a minor could not have signed such a symbolic document. No Daniel Tichenor received land in the first division of land or was on the first taxt list as would be expected of a man of age. His name does not appear in the records of Newark town meetings, after the signing of the Fundamental Agreement, until 1680, when he requested land. This was surely our Daniel Tichenor, as he was 23 at the time. The records give no evidence of an older Daniel Tichenor.

    Daniel Tichenor's name appears six times between 1680 and 1700 in the town records. In 1684, he had "Liberty ... to take up a piece of land in the Common ..." He was chosen fence viewer in 1689 and was chosen pounder in 1690. One item in the town record of Mar 5 1693 reads as follows: "Whereas, there is much Prophanation of the Lord's Day in the Time of Worship, by the playing of Boys and Girls; therefore Daniel Tichenor and Thomas Lyon are chosen to look after them, and to correct them, or call them by Name as they shall see occasion, for the Year ensuing."     On Jun 1 1680, Daniel Tichenor was deeded two acres in his father's home lot. Daniel bought 4-1/2 acres in "Little or Tichenor's Neck" adjacent to that lot on May 2 1694. In 1697, he received land, evidently jointly with his brother Jonathan, in right of their father. On Sep 3 1701, he had an "interest of one right" in purchase agreement covering Indian lands west of Newark. His will, written Nov 4 1727, named his wife Elizabeth and children Daniel, John, Joseph and Jane.

    Notes:

    "Joseph Tichenor died in 1750. His will of March 1, 1750, mentions only his first five children, Moses, James, Joseph, Daniel and Jane, all minors. Joseph, James and Jane were over the age of 14, so they asked the court to appoint Thomas Woodruff, Jr. of Elizabeth, NJ as their guardian. Since Daniel and Moses were under the age of 14, they were not entitled by law to choose their guardians.
    "In 1731, Joseph acquired land in New Vernon, a few miles south of Morristown. A second tract of land was purchased in 1739. He also purchased land in what is known as 'Turkey Pasture' from the heirs of William Penn. This is in the Great Swamp, now a wildlife preserve.
    "According to Harold Tichenor, the records of the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown contain the words 'confest for disregarding the lot' by Joseph's name. This refers to a casting of lots to settle a dispute over establishing a church in Morristown. The people of Morristown (then called West Hanover) worshipped at the Presbyterian Church at Hanover, which was established by 1718. By 1733, the population of Morristown (so named officially in 1740) had increased. The eastern portion of the parish opposed the move, so the church resorted to casting of lots. Even though the proposed division was voted down, a Morristown church was organized and a confession for disregarding the lot was required of those who had a part in it, Joseph among them. The church records also show that he renewed his covenant April 24, 1743, and became a communicant in September 1749."

    "Moses Tichenor (sic) served in the Revolutionary War in Captain Layton's Company of Morris County, New Jersey Militia in 1778, and was drafted into the Virginia Militia for a tour of duty to guard the prisoners taken at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. The prisoners were confined in Frederick County, Virginia. His son, David, was enrolled as his substitute and served from November or December of 1781 until March 12, 1782.
    Although the spelling of Moses Tichenor's name varies from the time he left New Jersey, he evidently preferred Tichenal."

    "Nancy Tichenell, first wife of Thomas Pritchard Jr., was descended from a prominent New Jersey family, most of whom retained the original spelling of Tichenor. Beginning with Nancy's father Moses, a Revolutionary War soldier, the spelling went awry, and his descendants used a variety of forms, most ending with 'L'."
    Nancy Tichenell (Titchenell, Tichnell, Tichenal) died before Oct 25 1812 (the date of husband Thomas Pritchard's remarriage to Mary Moody) in what is now Preston Co, WV. Nancy and Thomas had seven or eight children. Some genealogists believe that his daughter Mary was actually the daughter of Mary Moody. Because his daughter Elizabeth was born Feb 20 1812, it is quite likely that Nancy died at the time of that birth, a common event in pioneer families. Mary's given name is another clue.
    "Two weeks after their marriage in Allegany County, Maryland, Thomas became the guardian of Nancy's younger siblings, Stephen Tickenal (sic), Margaret Tickenal, and Jain (Jane) Tichenal, orphan children of Moses Tickenal, all of that county."

    Notes:

    As a whiskey distiller, it is said that Stephen Tichenall/Titchenell used to remark jokingly: "If you want to raise preachers, raise them in a still house; that is where I raised two good ones." Sons Daniel and Moses were ministers of the M. E. Church. Stephen's descendants have adopted the Titchenell spelling of their name. His children: Mary, James, Moses, Joshua, Margaret, Daniel, Rebecca, Lydia, Stephen.

    "The Pritchard Family History," pp. 94-95, reports the following Abigail: Abigail Tichenell, b. May 4 1785 in Maryland or New Jersey, married Henry Duckworth (b. Sep 5 1777 in NJ, d. May 26 1855) on Oct 1 1801 in Allegany Co MD by Rev. Shaw; died Mar 10 1874; both buried at Taylor's Drain Cemetery in Barbour Co, WV. Abigail's sister Jane is reported to have married George Sees (Cease) in Allegany Co MD on Oct 8 1814. Original sources for this information are not cited.

    But "Tichenor Families in America," p. 188, providing no birth/death/burial information, states: "Abigail was living in [Oct] 1818 when she was named in her mother's will, indicating that she was single at the time. ... Jane, b. ca 1789, m. Henry Duckworth Jan 10 1801 in Allegany Co MD. She was the wife of George Cease in Oct 1818 as revealed by her mother's will written at the time. Presumably the marriage record of "Jean Tichnell" to George "Sees" Oct 8 1814 in Allegany Co MD is hers." Original source for Jane's marriages given as Allegany County marriage records.
