He is said to have helped many poor laborers to homes of their own by permitting them to live on his lands and by giving them time to make payments, provided that they were honest and industrious. [Minnie Kendall Lowther's "History of Ritchie County," p. 601]

The 1860 Census showed the value of Franklin Maxwell's real estate to be $50,000, and the value of his personal estate to be $8,000. By the time of the 1870 Census, those values had increased to $80,000 and $40,000. According to his obituary, Franklin Maxwell left an estate worth about a half million dollars.

W. Brent Maxwell, one of the richest and best known men in West Virginia and the south and president of the Clarksburg National Bank of that state, is stopping at the Savoy with his daughter, Susie, and his niece, Emily.
Many times a millionaire, and one of the foremost captains of Industry in the country, Mr. Maxwell, even though taking a rest from his enormous business cares, is nevertheless interesting himself in the mineral condition of the state and of his properties here. His interests are many and varied and industries that are the most prominent in the commercial world know this man well. Oil, coal, timber, mining and cattle raising all have made millions for the wealthy Southerner. His stock farm at his home is reported to be one of the finest in his section of the country.
Mr. Maxwell may ultimately acquire valuable properties in the mining sections of this state.

WEST VIRGINIA MILLIONAIRE HAS HIS FIRST NEWSPAPER INTERVIEW
Is it better form to deny the soft impeachment of being a millionaire, or is it just a matter of discretion that rich men always smile when they are classed among this species of American business men?
W. Brent Maxwell, president of the Clarksburg National Bank of West Virginia, is said to be a millionaire by his friends, but at the Savoy yesterday Mr. Maxwell looked embarrassed and only admitted to owning a thoroughbred stock farm, timber lands, oil wells and coal lands, and that West Virginia was just as fine a state as Colorado, barring the gold and silver which are found here and not there.
Mr. Maxwell is a banker and does not like being interviewed, and his first experience in it came yesterday. He has come to Colorado on a "little vacation, just for a rest, and to take back my daughter, who has been here since last February."
"I like the climate here very much," said Mr. Maxwell, reluctantly. "I have been visiting some of the points of interest near Denver and looking over some mining property, but shall not invest very much, if anything. I think we have a very fine state; in fact, I guess it is just as good as Colorado. Where I live it rains almost every week in the year. It is what we call our bluegrass country, and the soil is similar to that region in Kentucky."
"You would not think of coming here to live, Mr. Maxwell?"
"Oh, no; I like my own hills, and am satisfied to go back and stay there. But I am very sure no one feels interested in me out here," and Mr. Maxwell shut up like a clam when asked the extent of his cattle interests and the number that roamed over the foothills of the Alleghenies, in one of the rich valleys of which he makes his home.

HEART ATTACK PROVES FATAL EARLY TODAY
W. BRENT MAXWELL, PRESIDENT OF CLARKSBURG AND WEST UNION BANKS, DIES

Banking and business circles in Harrison and Doddridge counties, in particular, mourn the death of W. Brent Maxwell, Sr., 80, of this city, president of the Union National Bank here and the West Union Bank at West Union, and other groups of citizenry in not only the two counties, but elsewhere in the state, where he was identified with its development, share in the sadness caused by his passing.
The death of Mr. Maxwell occurred shortly after 1 o'clock this morning in his home, 529 West Pike Street, following an illness of two weeks. While his condition had been critical at times since he was stricken, yesterday afternoon he showed improvement and there were hopes for his recovery, but a short time before the end came, he grew gravely worse and the members of his family were summoned to his bedside. An ailment of the heart was the cause of death.

RUGGED HEALTH
Mr. Maxwell enjoyed rugged health until his fatal illness and attended to business as usual despite his advanced age. He was about to start on a business trip to West Union when he became suddenly ill, as he had ordered his automobile to be placed in readiness and was on the point of leaving the house when he complained of illness and remarked that he would lie down a short time, hoping the pain about his heart would soon pass. The trip had to be abandoned, and he continued bedfast.
A specialist from an eastern city was summoned a few days ago, and every possible step waken to assist the venerable banker in battling the malady which had seized him, without avail. The end came as if he were passing into peaceful slumber.
William Brent Maxwell was born in Doddridge County April 27, 1850. He was a son of Franklin and Frances Jane Reynolds Maxwell. He was reared on his father's farms and attended school at West Union and Pruntytown. Some of his mother's people lived at the latter place. She was a member of the John Reynolds family which settled at Hepzibah at an early date.

WEALTHIEST CITIZEN
The earlier years of his life were spent by Mr. Maxwell as a farmer and stock raiser, and even to the end of it he devoted considerable time and attention to his vast acreages in Harrison and Doddridge, owning much of the best farm lands in the two counties. In addition to extensive grazing, fortune favored him with large oil and gas development on his properties, particularly in Doddridge County, until he became one of Harrison County's most affluent citizens. He was reported to be worth $10,000,000. He was a heavy investor in stocks and bonds.
He was Harrison County's wealthiest citizen.
Mr. Maxwell organized the Trader's National Bank in Buckhannon in 1892, but withdrew from it the following year and organized the West Union Bank at West Union, Doddridge County, and served it as president from its formation to the time of his death. He was one of the organizers of the old Traders National Bank here and became president of the Union National Bank which took over the affairs of the Traders National. He served continuously as president of the Union National from the time of its organization in April, 1905, until he died.
Also identified with other banks, Mr. Maxwell was a stockholder in the American National Bank at Richmond, Va., as well as in the Exchange Bank of Weston and the Parkersburg National Bank. Before moving to Harrison County, he served as a justice of the peace in Doddridge County.

TWICE MARRIED
Mr. Maxwell first married Miss Emma Belle Williams, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. John A. Williams, of Sycamore Dale, this county, October 8, 1884. They were the parents of two children, Susan Alice and Claude Maxwell. After the death of his wife, Mr. Maxwell married Miss Lillie Jarvis, a daughter of Lemuel D. and Martha Jarvis, of Clarksburg, July 10, 1895. She survives. Her father, who served once as sheriff of Harrison County, died a number of years ago. Her mother is still living here at the age of more than 97 years. The second set of children consists of Ruth Frances, Franklin J., William B., Jr., and Martha L. Maxwell.
Susan Alice Maxwell, the oldest daughter, married Charles Tutenberg, and lives at Scarsdale, N.Y. Claude Maxwell lives here. Ruth Frances, the second daughter, is the wife of Louis A. Johnson, prominent Clarksburg lawyer; Franklin J. and William B., Jr., live at home; and Martha L., the youngest daughter and child, is the wife of J. Hornor Davis, the second, of Charleston.

EARLIEST ANCESTOR
The earliest direct ancestor known was Thomas Maxwell, of Pennsylvania, who married, about 1785, Jane Lewis, a daughter of Alexander and Mary Smith Lewis. She was a second cousin of Robert Fulton, steamship inventor. He is thought to have been a son of William and Elizabeth Maxwell, of Chester County, who died about 1792. Thomas Maxwell died in 1796 while on a trip to West Virginia preparatory to removing his family to this state. Three years later his widow and her six children moved to this county and later to Lewis County, where she died October 20, 1835. Their children were Abner, Levi, Lewis, Robert, Amy, and Mary Maxwell.
Abner Maxwell first married Susan Davisson, and they were the parents of Franklin Maxwell and the grandparents of William Brent Maxwell. Abner Maxwell was captain of a Harrison County company in the War of 1812. He resided for a time in Clarksburg, but his last years were spent near West Union, where he died in 1864.

INHERITS ESTATE
Franklin Maxwell, the second son of Abner and the father of William Brent Maxwell, was born in 1813. He spent his life in Doddridge County, where much of the landed estate of his uncle, Lewis Maxwell, fell to his share. He married Frances Reynolds in 1840 and died July 4, 1894. Their ten children were: Leman, Lewis, Porter, Rector, William Brent, Harriet P. who married G.W. Brown, Mary Martha who died in 1860 at the age of five years, Franklin Post who died in 1880 at the age of 23, Frances Jane who married B.C. Bland, and Susan Alice who died in 1883, aged 22 years. They are all dead now except Lewis Maxwell, who lives in West Union.
W. Brent Maxwell was a Democrat in politics but independent in his voting. He was affiliated with the First Methodist Episcopal church. He contributed liberally to the charities of the church and community.
The body lies in state at the family residence, where it is being looked after by the Davis Undertaking Company. No funeral plans have been made.

Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the family residence, 529 West Pike Street, for W. Brent Maxwell, Sr., 80, president of the Union National Bank, who died there at 1:15 o'clock yesterday morning following a two weeks' illness of heart disease. The Rev. Dr. William E. Craig, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church, and the Rev. D. J.T. Carter, rector of Christ Episcopal church, will officiate. Interment will be made privately in the Elkview Masonic cemetery.
The active pallbearers will be J. Hornor Davis, W.M.B. Sine, James M. White, Carl L. Hornor, George M. Moore, T. Blair Willison, S. Austin Smith and Arthur Parsons, directors of the bank.
Honorary pallbearers have been chosen as follows: Lee Boggess, of Shinnston; W. Scott Stuart, Jackson V. Blair, A.A. Bee, B.W. Foley and Charles Langfitt, all of West Union; L.L. Loar, E.S. Ice, Will H. Davisson and Robert Morris, representing the banks here and at West Union, with which Mr. Maxwell was identified as president.
The body will lie in state at the family residence until after the services. Omission of floral token is requested by the family.

Yesterday Prosecuting Attorney C. H. Scott, of Randolph county, accompanied bv Miss Susie Maxwell, the charming daughter of Senator Maxwell, of Doddridge county, decided to take advantage of the sleighing and enjoy a pleasant ride. At the corner of Maret and Twelfth streets several teams were massed together and Mr. Scott found it necessary to turn off sharp, and in doing ao he upset the sleigh and Miss Maxwell was thrown out. She fell on her left side and was considerably braised, besides having her left arm dislocated. She was so frightened that she was almost thrown into convulsions, but on being removed to her room at the Stamm House, had her arm set and was made comfortable, although she will be obliged to remain in her room for about, a week. Mr. Scott managed to jump so as to alight on his feet."

SUICIDE WAS DELIBERATED
MARY MAXWELL CARRIED BARREL TO TREE TO WHICH SHE HUNG HERSELF
CLARKSBURG. W. Va.. July 1 -- Particulars of the death by hanging of Miss Mary Maxwell, 15-year-old daughter of Leeman Maxwell, of Bluestone, Doddridge county, show the act to have been one of deliberate suicide. The girl carried a barrel from the barn to the apple tree from which she hung herself late Monday afternoon. She also got some nails and drove two in a limb of the tree. Her mother asked her what she was doing and she replied that she was preparing lo pick some apples.
That night, after the family had gone to bed, she sat up reading. It is supposed she slipped out of the house about midnight, went to the appIe tree, climbed upon the barrel, placed the rope around her neck and then jumped from the barrel. A note was found pinned to her dress which contained the request that the family not grieve over her and to take a trip to Mount Clare, this county, the following day as they had planned.
The coroner decided her death was a case of suicide. No cause is assigned by the family for the act. The girl was in her usual health and appeared to be cheerful and lively.

Mrs. Davis was the wife of Charleston attorney, who has served in the House of Delegates and was the Democratic nominee for Mayor of Charleston four years ago.

NEWTON, Emily Regina Abel Lawrence

Emily Regina Abel Lawrence Newton died January 7, 2005 in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of ninety. She was born on May 30, 1914, in Washington, D.C., the elder child of Susan Maxwell Abel of Clarksburg, West Virginia, and Colonel Charles Abel and was the granddaughter of William Brent Maxwell and Emma Williams Maxwell of Clarksburg.

Emily grew up in Santa Barbara, where she attended Howard School in Montecito, and in New York where she graduated from Emma Willard School in Troy. She attended Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, and graduated from the Royal Academy in London, England, where she studied acting.

Always treasuring her West Virginia roots, she was a very generous donor to Alderson-Broaddus College, endowing the Maxwell Chair in the Humanities, as well as the Alderson-Broaddus College Scholarship Fund, established in memory of Emily's mother, Susan Alice Maxwell Tutenberg.

During her acting career she appeared on the New York stage and toured with Katherine Cornell in "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" as Henrietta. That tour included an extended overseas engagement with the USO, performing before military audiences during World War II. Among her many theatrical credits were Portia in "Julius Caesar" and Kathleen in "The Prescott Proposals."

She performed professionally under the stage name of Emily Lawrence.

Mrs. Newton was first married to Robert Lawrence Balzar of Los Angeles and then to Theodore Newton, also a stage and screen actor, who preceded her in death on February 28, 1963. Thereafter, she resided in Santa Barbara near her mother, Susan Tutenberg, who died in 1970.

She cared deeply for her fellow man and was a generous supporter of social and environmental causes throughout her lifetime, including Santa Barbara Rehabilitation Foundation, Santa Barbara County United Way, Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara, Planned Parenthood, Laguna Cottages for Seniors, Santa Barbara Foundation, Santa Barbara County Mental Health Assn., Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra Assn., Santa Barbara Visiting Nurse Assn., Community Action Commission, KCET, Santa Barbara Humane Society, Environmental Defense Center, Community Environmental Council and G.O.O. (Get Oil Out), among many others.

Emily is survived by her brother, Brent Maxwell Abel and his wife, Corinne, of San Rafael, California; a stepson, David Newton of Northampton, Massachusetts; two step-grandchildren, Hillary and Peter Newton; a niece, Molly Abel Warner of Monterey, California; and a nephew, Brent M. Abel Jr. of Moraga, California.

In accordance with her wishes, no memorial service will be held and her ashes will be committed to the water of the Pacific Ocean.

The Honorable Frank Jarvis Maxwell, Jr, 96, passed away at his home in Clarksburg on December 12, 2017.

Judge Maxwell was born in Clarksburg on July 13, 1921. The older son of Frank Jarvis Maxwell and Clara Gibson Maxwell, he attended Washington Irving High School and Phillips Exeter Academy, graduating in 1940 before going on to Harvard College and receiving an A.B. cum laude degree in History and Literature. Since his college studies were interrupted by the war, he completed part of his undergraduate coursework at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and, though a member of the class of 1944, his Harvard degree was not awarded until 1946.

Maxwell subsequently attended West Virginia University, where he joined the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, before enrolling in Harvard Law School, from which he received his L.L.B. degree in 1949. He was admitted to the West Virginia Bar Association that same year and became an associate of the Clarksburg office of the law firm of Steptoe and Johnson in 1950. He began his own title insurance practice in 1958.

Maxwell was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates from Harrison County for two terms, from 1951 to 1956. He was delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1956 (Adlai Stevenson) and in 1972 (George McGovern). He served as Clerk of the Harrison County Commission for twelve years until his election as judge to the Circuit Court of Harrison County in 1984, an office he held until 1992.

He was a director of the Union National Bank and of its successor, Key Centurion Bankshares, from 1980 to 1988. A member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Elks, the Jaycees, the Civitan, and the American Legion, in 1983 he was chosen as the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival’s Honorary Italian Man of the Year.

Maxwell served as a founding member of the Cultural Foundation of Harrison Country. As a member of its board of trustees, Maxwell played a pivotal role in the construction of the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library, both convincing the City Council of the need for a new building and of the hiring of the internationally renowned architectural firm of Marcel Breuer. Maxwell further served as a founding member of the Cultural Foundation of Harrison County. As President of the Concerned Citizens of Harrison County, Maxwell was an advocate on behalf of the environment, speaking out forcefully about the consequences of surface mining. He made a special public protest at the Charleston State Capital in 1972 when mining applications were being made for areas within Watters Smith State Park.

Along with his late wife, Susan Harnish Maxwell, the Judge was a great enthusiast of the arts, regularly attending classical music performances in Washington, D.C., New York, Pittsburgh as well as Sarasota, Florida, where he spent many of his more recent winters. He was particularly passionate about opera and could often be found listening to the Metropolitan Opera’s Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts on his Buckhannon Avenue home’s front patio. He credited his regular reading of opera libretti for keeping up his French, Italian, and German language skills, all of which he read and spoke with fluency.

While a soldier in the U.S. Army, Maxwell was stationed at Letterkenny, Pennsylvania. As a result of his foreign language aptitude, he was placed in charge of Italian prisoners of war. Among his duties was accompanying some of these prisoners on weekend visits to their American relatives in New Jersey and surrounding areas.

Despite his fluency in European languages, Judge Maxwell did not travel abroad until he was well into his forties. But in following years he and his wife made regular trips to England, France, Germany, Austria or Italy, all part of well-planned pilgrimages to various museums and “great houses” to see first-hand the art and architecture Maxwell had studied in school. As serious a tourist as he was a reader, his personal collection of literature and art books, along with his music recordings, was extensive.

As avid genealogist, Maxwell devoted a considerable part of his time to the care of his family’s business concerns, as had his late father. His great-grandfather, Franklin Maxwell, of Doddridge County, served as State Senator from 1881 to 1884. Another Doddridge County ancestor, Lewis Maxwell, served in the Virginia House of Delegates (before West Virginia had become an independent state), as well in the United States Congress from 1827-1833.

Judge Maxwell is survived by his brother, William B. Maxwell, III, of Charleston; two daughters, Clara Gibson Maxwell and Mary Maxwell Keller; a granddaughter, Saskia Maxwell Keller; two stepchildren, Michelle Gales Berry and Timothy William Gales; two step-granddaughters, Susan Gales and Kathleen Gales; and two great-step- grandchildren, Romeo Soto and Armani Gonzalez. He was lovingly cared for in his later years by Mary Katherine and Vickie Brown.

Funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 123 S. 6th Street, Clarksburg on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 11:00 am with Reverend Nora Becker officiating. Interment will follow in the Elkview Masonic Cemetery.

William Brent Maxwell, III, 93, passed away November 30 at The Ridgemont at Edgewood Summit, following an extended illness. Born in Clarksburg, WV, June 2, 1925, he was the second son of Frank Jarvis Maxwell, Sr. and Clara Gibson Maxwell.

After one year at Clarksburg’s Washington Irving High School, Maxwell attended Phillips Exeter Academy, graduating in 1943, Among his classmates at Exeter was the novelist John Knowles, author of the classic prep-school novel "A Separate Peace." Knowles, also a West Virginia native, would regularly ride with Maxwell on the train up to the New Hampshire school.

The journalist and editor George Plimpton was also a classmate and occasional dinner companion; both students smoked Camel cigarettes (which was allowed at the time), Plimpton being notorious for "bumming smokes" from friends and acquaintances, as Maxwell would later recall.

After one year at West Virginia University, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, he transferred to Harvard College. In 1944, Maxwell was drafted. During World War II, he served in the Navy Reserve, working in Norfolk, Virginia on projects relating to the detection and neutralization of magnetic sea mines. His mother’s brother, Francis Gibson, was a Captain in the Navy, and Maxwell fondly remembered visiting with his uncle at the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C.

Returning to Harvard in 1946, as an undergraduate Maxwell was suite-mate at Eliot House with the poet Frank O’Hara, and through O’Hara, become an acquaintance of the future illustrator and writer Edward Gorey, Both were memorable figures even as students, though Maxwell would remember “Ted” Gorey as especially eccentric, even then. Maxwell himself was a member of Harvard’s Hasty Puddiing, a college social club whose contemporaneous alumni included the actor Jack Lemmon and (by no coincidence) George Plimpton.

With a focus on American history and literature, Maxwell graduated with a degree in General Education in 1950.

As a result of his particular interest in the state’s legal and political history, Maxwell chose to attend West Virginia University’s College of Law, receiving his L.L.B. degree in 1952; that same year he was admitted to the state bar.

After working for his brother Frank J. Maxwell, Jr. as an attache to the West Virginia House of Delegates, he joined the practice of Preston & Davis, working there with a specialization in chancery law for thirteen years. When Preston & Davis dissolved, Maxwell joined Spilman, Thomas, Battle and Klostermeyer, where he headed the real property department. He served as deputy commissioner of Forfeited and Delinquent Lands in Kanawha County from 1963 to 1979 and as special commissioner for accounts for nearly the same period.

Maxwell’s love of history led him to write several publications which discussed the law firm’s early members; one about its founders was entitled, “Benjamin Harrison Smith and the Quieting of West Virginia’s Land Titles.” With “an encyclopedic memory for detail,” as noted in Spilman Thomas & Battle’s History of Service: The First 150 Years, his law partners rightly considered Maxwell the firm’s distinguished historian. He retired in 1989.

Other published essays and talks by Maxwell addressed the subject of West Virginia’s first European settlers. Articles such as “Two James Craiks and the Early History of the Kanawha Valley,” published in the West Virginia Historical Society Newsletter, explored the area’s early leaders and landowners.

He was a lifelong supporter of the arts, though he had a special enthusiasm for music. Following from its beginnings the singing career of fellow Clarksburg native Phyllis Curtin, while a college student he attended her first performances with the New England Opera under the direction of Serge Koussevitzky. Such experiences made him a life-long opera enthusiast. Maxwell would attend performances at the City Opera and Metropolitan Opera in New York City (where Curtin also sang); Glyndebourne, England; Vienna State Opera; as well as, in later years with his brother, the Sarasota Opera season.

Also on his trips to Europe, he paid visits to the ski slopes of Austria, Switzerland and France. Music and skiing also nicely overlapped at Snowshoe, where for many years he had a condominium apartment; this allowed him to enjoy alternating seasons of winter sports and the summer residency of the West Virginia Symphony. Also an avid squash and tennis player, he played on the Edgewood Country Club senior tennis team well into his late eighties.

As well as the West Virginia Symphony and Chamber Music Society, Maxwell was a supporter of the West Virginia Foundation and the West Virginia Humanities Council, At his alma mater, the West Virginia University College of Law, he endowed the William Brent Maxwell Scholarship as well as the William B. Maxwell III Oil and Gas Research Fund. He was inducted as a Dean’s Partner this past August.

Predeceased by his brother Frank only last year, he is survived by his nieces Clara Gibson Maxwell and Mary Maxwell Keller; his great-niece, Saskia Maxwell Keller; step-niece Michelle Gales Berry and step-nephew Timothy William Gales; as well his cousins William Maxwell Davis and James Hornor Davis, IV. Many other local and far-flung Maxwell relatives will long remember him for his kindness and generosity.

A member of St. John’s Episcopal Church congregation, his funeral will be held there on December 6 at 3pm. The Rev. Marquita L. Hutchens will officiate. St John’s is located at 1105 Lee Street E, in downtown Charleston.

He was a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Virginia Law School and was a member of the Order of the Coit and the Raven Society. He was admitted to the West Virginia Bar in 1953; served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1955; was staff judge advocate; a partner in Preston and Davis from 1953 to 1965, Spillman, Thomas, Battle & Klostermeyer from 1965 to 1986; counsel of Campbell, Wood, Bagley, Emerson, McNeer & Herndon from 1987 to 2003; a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1961 to 1962 and the West Virginia Senate from 1963 to 1966; president of Dingess-Rum Properties Inc. from 1987 to 2004; honorary trustee for Eastern Mineral Law Foundation; Coal Lawyer of the Year in 2002; a life member of the America Law Institute; a Fellow of the American Bar Association; chairman of the West Virginia Judiciary council from 1973 to 1981; president of the West Virginia Bar Association from 1985 to 1986; Kanawha County Bar Association; chairman of the National Council of Coal Lessors from 1980 to 2004; chairman of West Virginia Manufacturers Association from 1973 to 1975. Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 8, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Charleston, with the Rev. Bill Thompson and the Rev. Keith Butler officiating. Burial will follow in St. Matthews Cemetery, Charleston.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- William Maxwell Davis, age 89, died peacefully at his home in Charleston, WV, on July 2, 2021. Mr. Davis was born in Charleston, WV, on March 21, 1932, the son of the late James Hornor Davis II and the late Martha Davis.

He was preceded in death by his only brother, James Hornor Davis III; his sister-in-law Ouida Caldwell Davis and his step-mother, Eolyne Davis. He was the last of the 11 grandchildren of William Brent Maxwell of Harrison County WV.

He received his early education in Clarksburg and Charleston public schools and was a graduate of the Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, NJ and Princeton University. His entire business career was spent with the Bank of West Virginia, where he stepped down as president in 1979. In it, he followed a several generation of banking leadership. He was a world traveler and some of his earliest trips included the World's Fair in 1939 and the opening of the Olympic Games in Helsinki. He also served overseas in the U.S. Army. He twice served as the head of the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, appointed by the governor in 1968 a year after the commission's founding. He remained on through 2004. He also served on the foundation board of the Kanawha County Public Library and was eager to see the renovation through, which he hoped would be quite welcoming to all. His vast philanthropic interests included the Clay Center for Arts and Education (formerly Sunrise Museums), various music organizations - Chamber Music and WV Symphony, the University of Charleston of which he once served as acting president, The Historic Glenwood House Foundation for which he was serving his 41st year as president, WVU, his schools Princeton and Lawrenceville and many auto related museums and his church. Retiring early from his banking career, he dedicated much time to serving on the boards of various non profits across a broad array of interests throughout his state and the country.

A passionate automobile enthusiast from his very early days, he often recalled childhood events (and throughout his life) by the car that was involved. He was also among memberships and roles in a dozen different auto clubs, especially active with the Classic Car Club, the Classic Car Club of America Museum and the Rolls Royce Owners Club and Foundation and served as national president of all and judged the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance for over 30 years. He was the oldest continuous American member of the UK based 20-Ghost Club the oldest Rolls Royce auto club in the world and his cars often won best in class. An especially memorable event among many was his delight in taking an American built 1928 Rolls Royce Springfield (MA) roadster with left hand drive to England for a tour- creating some sensation on both continents, including New York Times photo coverage of it boarding the QEII for his Atlantic crossing.

Mr. Davis is survived by his nephew, James Hornor Davis IV (William Hague); his niece, Frederica Davis; his five great nieces: Frederica Morgan Davis, Faith Maxwell Davis Iselin (Alex), Tilden Davis Arnold (Alex), Warren Davis and Baird Davis.

He was predeceased by his nephew, Lewis Caldwell Davis. He cherished his ongoing contact with Caldwell's longtime partner, Beth Secor. He took great pride in them and their generations. He will be remembered for his great charm and for his genuine devotion to West Virginia, his community and his family -- and for his bowties.

In Charleston WV, visitation will be from 4 - 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7 at Bollinger Funeral Home, 420 Lee Street West. The memorial service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. July 8, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 36 Norwood Road, Charleston, WV 25314.

Joe enjoyed serving his fellow West Virginia citizens as a first responder in several capacities over the years. He volunteered at the Salem Fire Department and in 1984 got married then transferred to the Reynoldsville Fire Department. He volunteered in the Emergency Medical Services, becoming an E.M.T. with the Harrison County E.M.S. as a part of the "The Bump Crew" (Thursday night crew). After high school, he worked with the Heck’s Corp. in various departments up to management/department head positions, along with serving as a police officer for the city of Salem.

He was a dedicated telecommunicator for over a decade with WV State Police, Shinnston Detachment. Afterwards became a Deputy with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department to protect and serve for well over 15+ years. He was nicknamed “Papaw” at the WV State Police Training Academy, as he was the oldest in his class at 40+ and outran many of the 20-year-old cadets during the long weeks of training. As a cerebral palsy victim, he amazed medical personnel with his ability to push and achieve his goals.

Robert Haymond Maxwell of Clarksburg, WV, passed away June 30, 2015.

He was born in Clarksburg, WV, February 8, 1943, the son of the late Haymond Maxwell, Jr. and late Jane Linn Osborn Maxwell Rogers.

He attended Randolph Macon Academy and in 1961 graduated from Washington Irving High School. After graduation, he moved to California and studied cinematography and broadcasting at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles (UCLA). He was a graduate of The University of Hard Knocks, an honorary society created by West Virginia newspaper editor Jim Comstock.

Following UCLA, Mr. Maxwell moved to New York City where he was employed by NBC and ABC television. He worked on many network shows as a cameraman and an audio engineer including: The Today Show, Huntley Brinkley Report, Hullabaloo, AFL Football broadcasts and others. He also worked at television stations in Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. While in Pittsburgh he began to produce commercials and short films as an independent film maker.

In 1967 he received an “NET” National Education Award for Excellence for his work on the WQED production of “Is Anybody Listening?” This honor was given to him for his “Individual Contribution to Outstanding Television Programming.” This work examined the Moynihan Report’s (1964) relevance to Pittsburgh and includes a younger, pre Pulitzer Prize winning August Wilson in some of its Hill District footage.

He moved to Washington, D.C., and became a co-owner in a small production company, Palladium Independent Productions. He produced film for a national presidential campaign, and many senatorial, congressional and gubernatorial television advertising campaigns for candidates from throughout the United States. He independently produced TV Documentaries, TV commercials and radio jingles in the Washington, D.C. area. Several productions won awards. His work received three regional Emmy nominations. Mr. Maxwell’s political film work has been featured on “60 Minutes” and his music production has been featured on PBS Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”

He was a gifted still photographer and musician.

In the early 1980s Mr. Maxwell moved his base of operations from Washington, D.C., to West Virginia, where he continued to work on economic, political and environmental endeavors. He was a stockman at Sycamore Dale. He also authored several articles on environmental and historical topics which appeared in The Exponent Telegram.

Mr. Maxwell was an Episcopalian. He was a member of the Harrison County West Virginia Historical Society and a former member of Oral Lake Fishing Club.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Linn Maxwell of Clarksburg, WV; his best friend, William Haynes of Clarksburg, WV; and one daughter, Christine Porter Maxwell of Portland, Oregon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Maxwell’s memory to the Harrison County West Virginia Historical Society, P.O. Box 4695, Bridgeport, WV 26330.

According to the wishes of the deceased, there will be no visitation and a private burial will be held.

Ruth Maxwell Hill

NEW YORK -- Ruth Maxwell Hill, of 37 West 10th Street, died Friday, September 24, 2010, at home.

Ms. Hill was born January 31, 1956, in New York, the only child of Arthur Cheney Clifton Hill and Katherine Johnson Hill of New York City.

Ms. Hill was the only grandchild of Louis Arthur Johnson and Ruth Maxwell Johnson of Clarksburg, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

A lifelong resident of New York, Ms. Hill graduated from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and completed a master’s of fine arts degree at New York University. She pursued artistic interests in painting, silk screening, photography, video and music. She participated in group shows and taught art in underprivileged schools in the Bronx.

Ms. Hill is survived by her dearest friend, Timothy Druckrey of Brooklyn, a half brother, Peter Hill of Keene, N.H., and his children, as well as by numerous cousins.

Friends will be received from 2-3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at Greenwich Village Funeral Home, 199 Bleecker Street, New York. Services for Ms. Hill will be held at 3 p.m. that same day. Interment in the family plot in Clarksburg, West Virginia, will be at the convenience of the family.
