- Raised in Huntington, WV, he graduated from the West Virginia University Medical School in 1962. Following his medical residency in Honolulu, Hawaii, he served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965 in Thailand and Hawaii. Subsequently, his career in public health focused on work for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Agency for International Development, World Health Organization and as a county health officer for Santa Barbara, Kings, Madera, and Lake County in California, and Cochise County in Arizona. Internationally, his work centered on smallpox eradication and implementing immunization programs in countries ranging from Nigeria to India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. [1]
