    • Susie Davis Nicholson (p. 69) reports birth date as Apr 3 1855, and the 1900 Census also shows it as April 1855. But Harrison County Birth Record 1-16 shows his birth as April 1854. His age at death in Doddridge County Death Record, 52y 4m 16d, would put his birth at May 2 1855.

      Identified as Ed Strauther, white male, married, occupation farming; died 18 Sep 1907, age 52y 4m 16d, cause of death lung trouble. Reported by W.H.H. Douglass, undertaker. Neither the exact location of death nor the place of burial was indicated. Age at death would put his birth on May 2 1855, at variance with the April 1854 date shown in his birth record.

      Identified as J. E. Strather, age 50, married, no occupation; died 16 Sep 1907 at the Hospital for the Insane, cause of death tuberculosis. Reported by J. T. Pettit, physician.
      NOTE: Other than age at death, the Lewis County record filed by the physician appears to be the more reliable of the two. The entry filed in Doddridge County by the undertaker implies that the burial was probably in Doddridge, although we have found no confirmation of that.

      Jas. E. Strather [sic], 45, b. Apr 1855, salesman, married 7 months; wife Silvia C, 20, b. Oct 1879, married 7 months, no children; stepdau [sic] Blanch M, 16, b. Jan 1884; stepson [sic] Chas. R, 8, b. Aug 1891. All born in West Virginia.
      NOTE: Rather than stepchildren, Blanche and Charles were actually James Strother's children from his first marriage, to Hannah R. Gaston. The census-taker was probably dealing with Sylvia, who correctly identified them as her stepchildren.

Susie Davis Nicholson (p. 69) gives his middle name as Edmond, with marriage on May 29 1881 in Spencer, Roane County. Wes Cochran's "Doddridge County WV Marriages" also gives the May 29 1881 date.
