- Among his many military assignments were Naval Torpedo Station at Keyport, Washington; Naval Air Station at Lakehurst, New Jersey (just prior to the Hindenburg disaster); Norfolk Navy Yard in Virginia; and several duty stations in California toward the end of his career. He served several years in the late 1930s with the 4th Marine Division in Shanghai, China, as well as aboard the transport ship USS Chaumont (AP-5). The Marines were protecting U.S. citizens in Shanghai and aiding the Chinese against Japanese efforts to seize the city. The Chaumont suffered two mishaps during her China service in 1936-37, a week-long period aground at Chingwangtao and a collision at Shanghai with the Italian cruiser Raimondo Montecuccoli. In 1948, Noel Gabbert was stationed at the Marine Barracks, Guam, Marianas Islands, and served aboard the ammunition ship USS Mount Katmai (AE-16). He entered the Marines as a Private and rose through the ranks to Warrant Officer and Quartermaster Sergeant.
