"Pvt Otto Maxson, who died from the effects of exposure while serving in the United States Army, was born on April 5, 1918 on Middle Island Creek, in Doddridge County, West Virginia, and was reared on this farm until the time of his enlistment in the National Guard.
He enlisted on January 1 (sic), 1941, and was transferred to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, Co H, 201st Infantry, on Jan 5, 1941. He received his training here and on the completion of his training period, they went out on maneuvers to Ft. McCoy in Wisconsin, and on this trip the exposure caused him to contract rheumatic fever. After he became ill, he was transferred back to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, where he was hospitalized for approximately 30 days, and then he was given a furlough and sent home. He arrived home on Sunday evening, May 22, and on May 25, 1941, he died from the effects of this disease.
Pvt. Ray Corder, a cousin of Pvt Otto Maxson, was sent from Ft. Benjamin Harrison to represent the Army at this funeral. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of Salem, West Virginia, gave him a military funeral and fired the salute over the grave at the Big Isaac Cemetery."
