- Local news item, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, Jun 6 1918, in its entirety:
Jackson V. Blair, Jr., has been called to the aviation service, and prior to his departure for Camp Dick, Dallas, Texas, he spent a day in the old home town. Notwithstanding political differences, we always kind o' liked the kid, and here's wishin' 'im the best o' luck and some fifty-odd notches on his machine before this thing is over. as to "Little Jack's" last "official act," it was one of the most commendable in the hole category of human kindness.
Local news item, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, Aug 29 1918, in its entirety:
"Jackson V. Blair, Jr., showed up bright and smiling Monday morning, his new windshield trimmed to an exact nicety. Jack in on the move once more -- leavin' Columbus for the School of Military Aeronautics at Austin, Texas. Evidently Uncle Sam wants at least one good man down on the bornder to keep an eye on Mexico."
Local news item, "West Union Herald," Thursday, Oct 24 1918, in its entirety:
"A telegram received the last of the week by Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Blair announces the graduation of their son, Jackson V. Blair, Jr., in the ground work school of the aviation training camp at Austin, Texas, and that he will now train for the air at San Antonio, Texas."
Other than his four years of W.Va. National Guard Service which he reported in his World War I draft registration, we have found no record that Jackson V. Blair Jr. served in the U.S. military. In his WW I draft registration of May 1917, he claims exemption from the military draft, citing his prominent position with the Internal Revenue Service. However, his death certificate indicates that he served in World War I, and research by historian Judi Tarowsky has found credible evidence that he served in the short-lived West Virginia Flying Corps.
