- 1850 Census, Providence, Rhode Island, enumerated on Aug 3 1850:
Morris Deming, 78, b. Madeira, occupation boarding house; Catherine Deming, 55, b. Connecticut; William H. Deming, 28, b. Rhode Island, boatman; Jose Frye, 25, b. Western Islands, mariner; Lucy Mosely, 16 (or 11), b. Rhode Island; Mary Hannegan, 17, b. Ireland; Henry D. Smith, 35, b. Bermuda, mariner; Antonio Barrelli, 33, b. Italy.
(Note: The fact of Catherine Morgan being the mother of Morris Deming (b. 1807) is so reported in Reed's highly respected Durfee genealogy, Vol 2, p. 6. But her age 55 as given in this census would put her birth in about 1795, just 12 years before her son's birth. Although it is clear that Morris Deming (b. ca 1771 in Portugal) is the father of Celia and the younger Morris, one would conclude that the children had a different mother if her stated age in this census is correct. But it appears that her age in the census is not correct, based on age 66 given in her death record less that one year later. Regarding the census, it would appear that the non-Deming members of the household were probably tenants of Morris Deming's boarding house.) [6]
