- Local news item, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, March 14 1918, in its entirety:
"We are sorry to announce the very critical illness of Louis [sic] A. Ashburn, the well known mail carrier on one of our local routes, and one of the very best young men in this community. Mr. Ashburn recently underwent a surgical operation on one of his hands, having one of his fingers amputated on account of a gangrenous condition."

Wednesday, April 3rd, 1918, beginning at 1:30 o'clock P.M.
I will sell at my residence in Wabash:
1 nine-year-old bay horse, good driving and saddler, weight 1050;
1 six-year-old bay mare, good saddler, weight 1000;
2 hay stacks, one medium and 1 large, fine quality;
1 buggy, harness, shaves and pole;
1 saddle, halters, bridles and saddle blankets;
1 range stove for wood or coal;
1 shot gun;
1 repeating rifle;
a fine lot of good seed potatoes;
a good selection of canned goods;
several farm tools such as chains, mattocks, etc.
