- Graduated from Harvard University in 1961 with a BA in Far Eastern Languages and History, after having spent 3 years studying Japanese at International Christian University in Tokyo. After college, worked for the Peace Corps in Washington, DC. Came to Emmons, WV in 1964 as a VISTA worker. In 1966, elected to 2-year term in WV House of Delegates. Then served 4 years as WV Secretary of State, 3 years as president of WV Wesleyan College, and 8 years as Democratic Governor of West Virginia.
